Broadband Speed for IPTV in Ireland: What You Actually Need

Irish broadband varies enormously — fibre in one street, fixed wireless in the next townland. Since IPTV depends entirely on that connection, it is worth knowing the real numbers rather than the marketing ones.

The short answer

Allow roughly 8 to 12 Mbps per stream for Full HD and around 25 Mbps for 4K. Two Full HD streams at once want about 25 Mbps of genuine throughput. What matters is your measured speed between 8pm and 10.30pm, not the figure on your contract.

Worth knowing

Test your speed at peak evening time. Contract speed is a ceiling, not a promise.
Every simultaneous stream adds its full requirement — they stack.
On a rural or fixed-wireless connection, stay on Full HD and wire the main TV.

Fibre, 100 Mbps or more

Either plan works. Premium's 4K is genuinely usable, and five concurrent streams is realistic.

Around 50 Mbps

Both plans fine for Full HD. One 4K stream works; two will fight each other.

Around 25 Mbps

Basic on Full HD. Skip 4K — the line cannot sustain it.

Fixed wireless or rural

Test at peak first. Stay on Full HD, wire the main television, keep concurrent streams low.

Test it properly

Run a speed test at 9pm on a weekday, not at 11am on a Sunday.
Test on the device you will actually watch on, in the room you will watch in.
Run it twice — once on Wi-Fi, once on a cable — to see what the Wi-Fi is costing you.
If the wired figure is fine but Wi-Fi is poor, the fix is your network, not your IPTV plan.

Is 30 Mbps enough for IPTV?

For one or two Full HD streams, yes, provided that 30 Mbps holds up in the evening. It is not enough for 4K.

Does upload speed matter?

Barely. Streaming is almost entirely download. Upload only matters if something else in the house is uploading heavily at the same time.

Will a VPN affect my IPTV?
